Tutorial: Locating your computer's name
Question: How do I find out my computer's name?

Answer: Each computer in our service has a particular name that sets it apart from all other computers in our service. With that computer name, AIT staff can login to those computers and do installs for software, troubleshoot issues you may be having, or set up various settings or connections. It’s a tremendously helpful piece of information! Here’s how you can determine your computer’s name:

  1. Go to Start and right-click on Computer. Select and click Properties from the submenu that appears.
    Computer Properties submenu
  2. Near the top of the Systems Properties window that appears, locate and click the tab titled Computer Name. In Windows Vista, simply locate the section titled Computer Name in the information panel as shown.
    Computer Name
  3. Notice the line titled “Full computer name” followed by something like this: “BL-RPAS-xyz.ads.iu.edu”. The “BL-RPAS-xyz” part is your computer name, and it is the information we need whenever we ask for your computer name. Also, note that your computer name may not show RPAS but instead says GRAD, HONR, MILS, etc, - that’s most likely due to your department not being RPAS. Just provide the name as listed.

Congratulations! You have now learned how to find your computer name. It’s a good idea to know how to get to it because it’s a piece of information that will be requested by staff when providing technical assistance.
