Tutorial: What to do before calling tech support
Question: What steps can I take before calling tech support?

Answer:There are several things you can try before contacting technical support.

  1. Restart the computer. More often than not, this is the easiest way to fix most computer problems.

  2. Ensure all cables are connected. The computer cannot communicate with the peripherals if it is not connected to them. This also extends to the PCs networking capabilities. Ethernet cables and switches should be checked for connectivity if you can see or reach them.

  3. Ensure all hardware is turned on. Make certain that printers, switches/hubs, scanners, monitors, PC Towers, etc. are all turned on and show no signs of error.

  4. Check AIT alerts. If you can access the Internet but certain applications do not seem to be connecting or functioning properly, check the AIT Alerts page. There is a chance that the server hosting those systems is undergoing maintenance. You may also want to check UITS notices and alerts at http://itnotices.iu.edu/
